What is CBYX?

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (a.k.a. CBYX) is a non-profit organization in which 250 students from all over the U.S. are awarded a fully paid scholarship, by the government, to go to Germany. It was founded in 1983 to strengthen bonds between Germany and the U.S.

Within the CBYX scholarship program, there are five regions that are partnered with it: AFS (which handles the northeast region of the U.S.), CIEE (which handles the southeast region), YFU USA (which handles the central north U.S.), ASSE (which handles the northwest region of the U.S.), and, my region, AYUSA which has now been taen over by FLAG (which handles the southwest). Here are the links for each of the organization's websites:

All of these organizations choose 64 finalists- 14 of which are alternates and 50 of which who are going- that would best represent the U.S. in Germany. To even be considered you must at least be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, between the ages of 15 and 18 at the start of the program, and be a current high school student at the time of the application with GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The applications are then evaluated based upon evidence to adjust to another country such as flexibility, curiosity, open-mindedness, sense of humor, and tolerance for adversity, along with written and oral communication skills, motivation for cross-cultural experience, and academic merit.
