CBYX Update

So my birthday was this last weekend and my friends and family decided to get me stuff for Germany cause they know how desperately I need stuff. These are what my friends got me:

Make-up train case to house all of my make-up/ beauty tools/ hair stuff so that I don't have to lug everything in small make-up pouches

An American shirt so I can be the "typical American" that wears their flag

A small cross-body bag with zipper for easy travel

And my parents decided to join in on the action too; instead of concert tickets- which is my usual present- they got me a hair straightener and space bags.

Not only was birthday this week, but I also had my last two days of school! (Today was my last day!) I am officially a junior and can actually consider myself an exchange student! I almost started crying today, realizing that this was going to be the last time I set foot on campus before I'm a senior. But that's beside the point: my french teacher snuck me some German books from the supply closet so I can start learning over the summer. Yipee!

Another thing was my friends got me a lot of money for my birthday so I bought myself a 30 gig iPod classic with some skullcandy headphones; I hover by my front door everyday waiting for the package to come. Other than that, my friends helped me make a paper chain countdown with a little not on each chain for me to read everyday I take one off.

74 more days left! So close I can almost feel it!

What is exchange?

This was stolen from someone else's blog which was stolen from a quote. Anyways, think this is awesome!

"Exchange is change. Rapid, brutal, beautiful, harmful, colorful, amazing, unexpected, overwhelming, and most of all constant. Change in lifestyle, country, language, friends, parents, houses, school, simply everything.
Exchange is realizing everything they told you before hand was wrong, but also right in a way.
Exchange is going from thinking you know who you are to having no idea who you are anymore to being someone new. But not entirely new. You are still the person you were before you jumped into that ice cold lake. You know how it feels like to be on your own. Away from home, with no one you really know. And you find out that you can actually do it.
Exchange is learning to trust. Trust people who, at first, are only names on a piece of paper, trust that they want the best for you, that they care. Trust that you have the strength to endure a year on your own, endure a year of being apart from everything that mattered to you before. Trust that you will have friends. Trust that everything's going to be alright. And it is seeing this trust being justified.
Exchange is thinking. All the time. About everything. Thinking about those strange costumes, the strange food, the strange language. About why you're here and not back at home. About why you're here and not back at home. How that girl is going to react when you see her again. About who's hanging out where this weekend. At first who's inviting you at all. And in the end where you're supposed to go, when you're invited to ten different things. About how everybody at home is doing. About how stupid this whole time-zone thing is. Not only because of home, but also because the TV ads for shows keep confusing you. Thinking about what's right and what's wrong. About how stupid or rude you just were to someone without meaning to be. About the point of all this. About the sense of life. About who you want to be, what you want to do. And about when that English essay is due, even though your marks don't count. About whether you should go home after school, or hang out at someone's place until midnight. Someone you didn't even know a few months ago. And about what the hell that guy just said.
Exchange is people. Those incredibly strange people, who look at you like you're an alien. Those people who are too afraid to talk to you. And those people who actually talk to you. Those people that know your name, even though you have never met them. Those people who tell you who to stay away from. Those people that talk about you behind your back, those people that make fun of your country. All those people who aren't worth your giving a damn. Those people you ignore. And those people that invite you to their homes. Who keep you sane. Who become your friends.
Exchange is music. New music, cool music, weird music, music you will remember all your life as the soundtrack of your exchange. Music that will make you cry because all of those lyrics express exactly how you feel, so far away. Music that will make you feel like you could take on the whole world. And it is music you make. With the most amazing musicians you've ever met. It is sight reading a thousand pages just to be part of the school band.
Exchange is uncomfortable. It's feeling out of place, like a fifth wheel. It's talking to people you don't like. It's trying to be nice all the time. It's bugs...and bears. It's cold, freezing cold. It's homesickness, it's awkward silence, and it's feeling guilty because you didn't talk to someone at home. Or feeling guilty missing something cause you were talking on Skype.
Exchange is great. It's feeling the connection between you and your host parents grow. It's knowing in which cupboard the peanut butter is. It's meeting new people from all over the world. It's having a place to stay in almost every country in the world. It's getting a new family. One of them being a huge group of the most awesome teenagers in the world. It's cooking food from your home country and not messing it up. It's seeing beautiful landscapes you never knew existed.
Exchange is exchange students. The most amazing people in the whole wide world. Those people from everywhere that know exactly how you feel and those people who become your absolute best friends even though you only see most of them 3 or 4 times during the year. The people who take almost an hour to say their final goodbyes to each other. Those people with the jackets full of pins. All over the world.
Exchange is falling in love. With this amazing and wildly beautiful country. And with your home country.
Exchange is frustrating. Things you can't do, things you don't understand. Thing you say, that mean the exact opposite of what you mean to say. Or even worse...
Exchange is understanding.
Exchange is unbelievable.
Exchange is not a year in your life. It's your life in one year.
Exchange is nothing like you expected it to be, and everything you wanted it to be.
Exchange is the best year of your life. Without a doubt. It's also your worst. Without a doubt.
Exchange is something you will never forget, something that will always be part of you. It is something no one back home with truly understand.
Exchange is growing up, realizing that everybody is the same, no matter where they are from. That there are great people and there are douche bags everywhere. And that it only depends on you for how good or bad your day is going to be. Or the whole year.
And it is realizing that you can be on your own, that you are an independent person. Finally. And it is trying to explain that to your parents.
Exchange is dancing in the rain for no reason, crying without a reason, laughing at the same time. It's a turmoil of every emotion possible, Exchange is everything. And exchange is something you an't understand unless you have been through it."

Onsite Orientation!!!!

So last Friday- just about a week ago- I left my small city in Arizona to go to Bridgman, Michigan and meet all of the people that I will be spending a year with in Germany. Let me just say, these people are amazing! It was probably one of the best weekends I had ever ha in my life! (I will be sharing my journey through pictures.)

So this is me. I got this pic taken when I met everyone and was telling them how excited I was that this was finally happening. We were kind of jumping up and down and being really impatient.

And these are the fabulous people that I flew with. (From right to left: Kelia- making a gorgeous face, Celina, and me. There was another person- Tim, but he was the one taking most of the pictures that are posted.) We had met only about 15 minutes before this picture, but we instantly started talking like we had known each other forever, and I can honestly say, that these two are a couple of my closest friends now.

And this was us being silly on the plane (Hey, look! There's Tim!)

We finally arrived at the O'hare airport after a three and a half hour flight, getting into Chicago at around 2:30. However, we were stuck at the airport until about 7:00, waiting for all of the other flights to chime in.

Kansas and Arizona were the first to Arrive.

And as the day went on, we grew to many, many people and we all had a fun time getting to know each other.

And this was our lovely orientation center; It was so green! We don't get scenery like that in Arizona. Fun fact: the owners of the retreat center are German, so a bunch of the signs were in German!

The first day of orientation, was the day that we really got to meet everyone and have fun. We would have a schedule that consisted of getting a crap-ton of information thrown at us, have an hour break, eat some of the best food on the planet, and then repeat two more times. It was great, though! We all interacted with each other as if we had been great child hood friends; I guess that's what you get when you throw 54 crazy and awkward teenagers together that have the balls to leave their friends, family, and everyday life to go to a place they have never been to, speak a language they don't know, and live the culture.

We also got our schedule for the year to come of important dates:
*August 10, 2013- this is the day we leave all of our loved ones behind and depart for Washington D.C.
*August 11, 2013- this is the day we leave our beloved country behind and travel to Germany
*August 12/13, 2013- we are officially in Germany and make our way from the airport on buses to our language camp in Hedersleben where we will be spending an entire month with everyone learning to speak the German language
*September 7, 2013- the day we finally get on a train and meet our host families for the first time
*September 9, 2013- our first official day of German school at a gymnasium
*sometime in January 2014- midyear orientation in Cologne with all of my FLAG CBYXers to see how far we have come with our German and share our experiences
*sometime in June 2014- end of the year orientation in Berlin with all of the 250 CBYX recipients
*June 18, 2014- this is the day we leave Germany to come back to Washington D.C. :(
*June 20, 2014- the day we finally fly home and see out wonderful family and friends for the first time in a year

It's crazy to think about everything that far in advanced. And It's hard to believe that I leave for Germany in about two months!

The second day was just as much fun. We got to do some improvisation for a couple hours so that we could experience how fast we will need to be thinking on our feet when we're in Germany; Let's just say I epically failed at that. Then, after yet another amazing lunch, we split into groups to get some more info on how we should act when we are in Germany, and the expectations people have for us, along with the expectations we should and shouldn't have for our year abroad. We had a little more free time when all of that was over, and soon after, exchange students from Brazil and Germany came to talk to us about their experiences being an exchange student; we even got to ask them a bunch of questions. After the Q and A sesh, a bunch of a started a soccer game against the two foreigns and we lost pretty bad, but we had a lot of fun. Then, at the end of the night, we had a little closing bonfire to wrap up our weekend.

Sadly, the last day came and we had to say goodbye to everyone we became close to. Fortunately, we will all be seeing each other again very soon. Let the countdown begin! I can honesty say there is no other group of people I would want to spend my year abroad with.

See you guys in 78 more days!

This is really happening!

Today was the changing point- the day my brain finally put together the fact that I'm going to Germany!

This morning my parents were already discussing when they were going to visit me and what they wanted to do...my dad even wanted to pay for the hotel today! This is when I realized I was going; they wouldn't make a payment on something and then not go....Oh my lord I was freaking out! I am seriously so excited and I want these days to go by so I can be in Germany already. At least I only have to wait a few more days until I see everyone I'm going to Germany with; that makes life a whole lot better!

I think it should just be August already...92 more days!

Orientation

We just found out about orientation! I am so stoked to meet everyone! Everything is starting to fall into place and starting to actually seem real! So far, this is what I know:

I depart next Friday at 9:15 am from the Phoenix Sky Harbor airport with the other three people going with CBYX from Arizona. We fly into Chicago and then get bused from the airport to somewhere in Michigan. It is then my understanding that we will be doing icebreakers and getting information on Germany. We then come back late on the following Monday.

Other than that, I honestly have NO idea what to expect. I keep thinking of something like summer camp and church camp and my RYLA camp I went to (which was, by the way, one of the coolest and best things I have ever done and I will make a post about it later), but I know it's not going to be anything like them. I just know that I will have an amazing time and make friends since I'm good at doing that. :)

Anyways, just super excited! And the countdown until I depart for Germany is officially at: 95 days- WHAT?!?!?!?! No more triple digits! We're down to doubles! No fricken way!
